Cellular has some great full of suspense action sequences and lots of chases on foot or with cars. The perfomances from Chris Evans, Kim Basinger and Jason Statham are top notch and the interactions on the phone between the 2 leads were powerful enough for me to care about them and their survivalcharacters overall also there's some great humor and i loved the end credits style too, fans of the Cast and people who like action thrillers won't be disappointed. (10/10)
Did you see Phone Booth, 2002's surprise hit with Colin Farrell caught under a sniper's range in a phone booth? If so, did you like it? If you did, you'll love its sequel, Cellular. Although it actually isn't a sequel, the plot's similar, the themes are the same, and they're written (or at least, the story's created by) the same guy, Larry Cohen. While in Phone Booth, Farrell was stuck confined in one place, Ryan (Chris Evans) has the freedom to go wherever he wants. They're quite similar, yet executed completely differently. Phone Booth, by Batman killer Joel Schumacher, is a claustrophobic movie, while Cellular is dealt with in a more consumer-friendly, generic-action movie way. So, comparing the two of them is apples to oranges.<br/><br/>Jessica Martin (Kim Basinger), the world's sexiest high school biology teacher, is kidnapped and taken to an attic somewhere. The phone is smashed, but she, being the scientific genius that she is, Jessica gets the phone to work and dials a random number, which calls the cell phone of Ryan. He initially takes ita joke, but soon goes to attempt to rescue her and try and keep her husband and son out of danger. William H. Macy comes inpolice officer trying to solve everything,he's approaching retirement. Things get out of hand, obviously.<br/><br/>What breaks Cellular apart from other generic thrillers of the new millennium is simply how fun it is. It's campy at times, it's unbelievable, the plot's thin and full of holes, but I doubt you can have more fun at a movie this year. And unlike all of these serious action/thrillers, Cellular is pretty damn funny, too. I think you would have to sell your soul to not find it hilarious when Macy's beating the crap out of someone. The characters, some broadly defined, some not, all work. Macy plays the cop (generating a "with" credit in the beginning) who's simply the best part of the movie. His plans for after retiring are great, and seeing him fly across a room, gun in hand, like The Killer makes any movie worth watching. Cellular has its share of thrills, nothing above what we've been seeing, but I'm going to say it's the most fun you can have in a movie theater this year.<br/><br/>Are the bad guys one-dimensional and have names no one would name their kid? Sure. Is the main female some annoying character who happens to know how to assemble a telephone for no reason at all? You bet. Is there a car chase? Yep. But Cellular's still a damn fun movie with a great cast. Basinger cries, but still kicks ass. It is hard to imagine, though, from this performance, that she won an Oscar. Evans, a relatively unknown, does a pretty good job here and also kicks some ass. Macy adds to his laundry list of great performances. The man can do no wrong, and kicks even more ass here. This movie is full of great ass-kickers. Jason Statham does a typical bad-guy job here, but he kicks a lot of ass. Basically, if you want to see ass kicked, see this movie.<br/><br/>I suppose Cellular could be considered trashy. It certainly can't be mistaken for an amazing movie, but if you want to see something fun, entertaining, and a great time killer, then Cellular is your movie.<br/><br/>My rating: 8/10<br/><br/>Rated PG-13 for violence, terror situations, language and some sexual references.
Macy once again brightens an otherwise mundane character.
